Playing games makes you a gamer, on the word's most basic level of understanding.

Not necessarily. His question is debatable. Dancing doesn't make you a dancer, on the word's most basic level. Using psychology doesn't make you a psychologist, and singing a song doesn't make you a singer.

Personally, I'd say the legit "gamer" is someone who actually gets paid to play games, or is part of an organization that does. In the same sense, a writer isn't someone who just writes, it has to be someone who legit gets paid for writing or is part of a group of people that write.

Gaming can be a profession but it isn't necessary to get money for it to be considered a gamer. The formal definition of a gamer is:

"A person who plays a game or games, typically a participant in computer or role-playing games."

By this, it has to be someone who plays games regularly, or at least often. Playing 1 game 1 time isn't enough to qualify as a gamer, and getting paid to do it is more than enough to qualify.

Like BBB said, granted that said person hasn't only played a game once, but rather does it regularly, then that person is a gamer. And the same goes for those other examples.
