Looking for Beta Testers!

by xstargaming » Sun Sep 04, 2016 7:24 pm

Hello everyone! :D

I notified a number of you last evening that I would be seeking beta testers for my upcoming PC game, Shadows, starting today. Shadows is a 2D puzzle platformer where you must maintain the balance between the darkness and the light or perish in your quest to find your way home. Throughout the caves in which you are trapped are five pieces to building the beacon, your means of calling for help to any who might see the light. Be way, however, for these items are guarded by dangerous and mysterious challenges for you to solve. Your past is likewise scattered in the caves through memories hidden in the passages of the caverns, if you wish to discover it. In the darkness, can you find the light?

Beta testing will last for about two weeks; during that time, I'll be taking suggestions and comments from all of you for the game's improvement. If you are indeed interested, comment below! I'll send you the game link via private message and add you into the credits as a tester. Thank you in advance to all participants. :)

Well since I'll have nothing to play once I finish Ratchet and Clank (2 days is my estimation)... yeah, I can be your tester.

I can join! I'll check the game ASAP, but you'll might have to wait for me to give response, which might be a while. So I'm nkt the ideal beta tester.

Yeah sure, but I'm back to school tomorrow so I may not be able to contribute as much as others.

You're still voiced by Paul Bettany in my brain :P

Don't worry if you don't have a lot of time to offer; everything helps! I've sent the beta link to you three, so you should be able to download the game and play it without any trouble. If you do run into issues, let me know and I'll remedy them immediately. :)

Interesting premise for the game. So what's your dev stack? Are you using an engine (Unity, Unreal..) and/or framework; or are you creating your own?

Here's a clip that's In keeping with the game's theme (it may even serve as inspiration) :

I made use of an engine called MMF2 for this; it's an older engine designed specifically for 2D games, but I found it useful. There's a built-in decompiler that turns the MMF2 code into C++ so I could make finer adjustments. Also, interesting clip! I never watched Samurai Jack growing up, but I always saw pieces of it. Perhaps this will offer some ideas to further the game. :)

Hello everyone! I've been informed of some bugs in the current version of the game; later today I'll make a patch for it and send it off to all of you. Note: this patch will only contain the .exe file for Shadows, so just replace the game with the newer version wherever you downloaded it to. :)

As I have not yet been able to access and test the game as the first few days have been hectic, but am currently free to, should I wait until the next version or use the current and just report the same old same old bugs that everyone else has

I would wait until the next version. I should have it out to everyone by 5 p.m. EST.

I've patched the game according to the following bugs that were found:

-Buttons on the main screen should be much easier to click now.
-Tutorial now exits upon clicking the next arrow when at the last slide.
-Double-jumping not working while pressing 'e' has been fixed.
-Levels no longer disappear when walking back and forth between two areas rapidly.

The updated version has been sent to all beta testers who signed up! :D

Hello everyone! I've gotten some new bug reports, so I'll release a patch for those by the end of the day. In case you still want to report bugs using the older version for now, here are the bugs that were reported:

-Save exploit upon exiting from the death screen allows the player to return with one life.
-Exploit for being able to jump through the Ancient Hall barrier.
-Double jump causing the player to land inside the ground on occasion.
-Lives could exceed 3 some rare cases where the player exited immediately before getting to the death screen.
-Cutscenes will now be skippable by hitting the escape key.

h1 evri1

First impression of the game :

I have... absolutely no idea... how to play it.

I click "play", choose a slot, and just watch the little black stain fall to his death.

Slowly.

I cant' delete saves btw (nothing happens when I click on the trashcans)

You shouldn't be seeing that unless it can't find the level files. Could you post a screenshot? I'm quite confused as to how this is the case. Have you put the patched version of Shadows with the original files and not separate to the level data?

Also, it's a double-click on the bins to remove it; I didn't want people accidentally deleting their files, but I can make an adjustment if it's warranted.
