Hero - Bonehart & lots of Chill wands. You can easily get through wave 59th. Bosses at 60th are rather hard to defeat. After that it gets even heavier and no special items = no progress. I'm not buying gems. It takes time to collect them, but it's lots of fun and worth it with no doubts
