How should towers be handled in the future?

I wanted to ask everyone what you think should happen with towers in the future? Should they be separate towers with one path like in KRV or multiple ways of upgrading like in the older games? Perhaps a combination of both or upgrade trees with multiple branching paths?

I'd prefer the older games, as the more it becomes like Vengeance, the more like a standard TD it becomes. Take, for example, Bloons.
KRA is now complete.

I definitely prefer the older style. If they want to add more towers, they can just have more tier 4 branches. And for wacky towers they can just add new archetypes.
