Trigonometric Graphs

by Big Bad Bug » Wed May 11, 2016 3:13 am

The weekly math problem I get for my class is about writing equations for functions shown on a graph. However, the day that the lesson takes place is also the day of a PM exam that I have to take to get credit for a college-level course early (that way I don't have to do it after high school) so I won't be able learn how to do it. I was wondering if anybody here would be able to help me out with it early so that I don't have to go through the process of learning it all after school with my teacher. :P

Here's the math problem:

It looks like the kind of math problem that would be easy for anyone who knows how to solve such a situation, but hard for someone new to figure out where to begin. So, spare me the "this is nothing compared to..." sort of claims. I know it can get infinitely harder. ;)

Sorry, but I only know cos, sin and tan of x in trig graphs. I feel like my education system is behind yours to be honest

I fixed the image so that it's easier to read and see. I didn't realise that 640x480 doesn't mean 640x480.

I think these are just graph transformations.
Here's a website that should help you out
http://www.mathsgenie.co.uk/transforming-graphs.html
My maths teacher told me about it and I'm using it to revise. I can't actually open the youtube video (I used cold turkey so I could force myself to revise more) but if the other ones I have seen are any indicator it should be helpful

Wait! I do know these know I can load the page!

Red is Cos x I think. The rest are translations of the others. I'll get to them in a bit.

Don't answer them for him
he wants to learn how to do it not be told the answers

Well ok. Is it ok if I post the rules for trig graph translations?
(Because if I teach them it'll probably help me remember for a fortnight when I've got my maths exam

GCSEs over the next four weeks or so.
Let's see.

I'm assuming you know the y=f(x) rules, if not I'll explain those also.

The peak of a trig graph is always 1, trough is always -1, line in the middle is 0. That's your y-axis.
X axis changes a bit from question to question. Generally it'll have intervals of 90 or so, relating to degrees.Y = sin X goes to 1 at 90 and back to 0 at 180, -1 at 270, 0 at 360 and so on and so forth. They just act as a frame of reference.
Some graphs are "squished", giving them an equivalent to a higher gradient. At line that crosses 1 at 45, 0 at 90 and so on is y=2(sinX) for example.

Um I'm bad at explaining. If that's confusing then google it or something

I tried it at school today and ended p figuring it all out on my own. :D My math teacher took it and said that he was impressed by my ability to teach myself the lesson just off of one math problem. :hero:

I would show my answers but I turned it in already so I'd have to do it again, which I would be willing to do except that I'd have to keep going back between the image link and here to solve and then write my answers. :P

I think they're all gradients.

Y=1/2sinX, Y=3sin X etc. No displacements (Y=sinX+1) or displacements in the X axis (Y=sinX+90)
