Review of my DnD Character

by SilasLock » Sat Nov 02, 2013 9:49 pm

I've been in a Role-playish mood recently and I decided to create a character for up-and-coming DnD games with my friends. However, I'm not sure if he's up to snuff and needs more personality, abilities, planning, or whatever. So here he is. If you guys have any suggestions for his development, I'd be really grateful. :)
Also, I'm doing this in version 3.5 of DnD. Just FYI.

Name: Estin Estuary

Race: Human

Deity: Corellon Larethian

Alignment: Chaotic Good

Estin is a Sorcerer who primarily deals with fire magic, and sometimes dabbles in mind-altering magics too. He has a magic ring that he received from his father that allows him to summon flame into his hand infinite times per day. The flame cannot hurt him and is largely ineffective in combat, and mostly functions as a lighter/torch. Estin's greatest strength is his Charisma, which allows him to cast more spells and gives him an innate way with people.

At a young age Estin took to worshipping Corellon Larethian, even though he was not an Elf. He admired the stories of the elven god and tried to live as freely and as openly as he could, emulating his deity in a roundabout fashion. This happy-go-lucky attitude towards life led him to always put a smile on his face even when things are at their worst, and he never had any trouble making friends. He took to adventuring out of a desire to see the world and to enjoy the journeys he would have.

Rebellious by nature, Estin is Chaotic and wild. He doesn't like rules or regulations, and is a free spirit at heart. He is also Good, but not to any zealous level. He just likes making other people happy, and doesn't fight for the side of Good because of any desire to protect the weak. In short, he's only a little closer to Chaotic Good than Chaotic Neutral. A dashing young charmer with blonde hair and light green eyes, he wears a red-brown wide brimmed hat with a feather in it as his signature look. He additionally wears a long cloak of the same color and wields a short sword, although he's not very adept with it. Often, he can be very clumsy and trips over obstacles and drops things at the worst moments, but he always manages to score a laugh out of onlookers.

Stats, in order from best to worst:
Charisma
Wisdom
Intelligence
Constitution
Strength
Dexterity

Good qualities:
Has a love of life and adventure
Passionate and brave
Daring
Charismatic, good with people
Cheerful

Bad qualities:
Clumsy
Not especially powerful
Has trouble taking things seriously
Has a bad habit of trying to seduce every woman he meets
Winks at everyone for no good reason
Often gets into trouble

I'm planning to have Estin multiclass into the prestige class Dashing Swordsman
http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Dashing_Sw ... e_Class%29
http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Dashing_Sw ... e_Class%29
http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29882
as soon as possible, turning his ordinary clumsiness and complete ineptitude with physical combat into a heroic protagonist who uses his coolness as power.

What do you guys think? Where can I improve him, or is he already good enough as is? My goal is to make Estin a character who is great for Role-playing and adds spice to the campaign, but lacks any real power until later in the game. Any feedback would be really appreciated.

Is this character based on me?

Great character, but I've never played D&D so I might be missing something.

Whoa, you responded really fast! :o

Nope, this isn't based on you. Sorry. ;)

Have you ever played any role-playing games before? If not, you could just compare him to a book character before throwing him into the story. :)

If by role-playing games, you mean games like sonny and epic battle fantasy, then yes. I've never played tabletop or anything.

Then the book example still stands. Also, EBF. So amazing.

Estin is kinda similar to Matt. Kinda.

What I find funny is that RPGs rarely are a true role playing game.
Also,I like RP,I RP on Minecraft Servers.(Don't judge me.)

Its kinda true.

A lot of role playing games are about stats, not character, which isn't really the point of role-playing.

I'm a stats kind of person. Very analytical, I am.

I've been thinking of having Estin attend a gnome college or something. It seems like it would fit his nature. He would learn to enjoy the company of gnomes, be used to living in an area meant for people smaller than him, enjoy whipping out spontaneous magic tricks, and would like tinkering with their machinery.

Great idea! It would make a unique character even more interesting.

There's a reason he's human. Usually I play a half-elf or something, but humans in particular excel as a short-lived race who have much more ''energy'' than other races. Elves may be reserved, dwarves may be gruff, but humans can just go out there and love life. That's pretty much exactly what Estin is: A fun-loving guy who's making the most of what little time he has.

Trust me, human is the best race for Estin. Elves would put him in a very different place for growing up. He'd have to either change his personality to match that of an elf, or grow up feeling like a bit of a rebel in an otherwise elven society. As a human, he doesn't act chaotic out of a sense of rebellion against someone or something, its just who he is. Having his heritage as something he needs to fight is not what I want him to have to deal with.

And draconian? Just... why?
What happened to all that natural charisma, lack of physical ability, charm, and blonde hair? He's a dashing young rogue, like Ezio (Assassins Creed)or Wesley (Princess Bride), not some hulking lizard dragon man! :o

Whoa, that's a big list! He's a DnD character, though, not a KR hero, so he might be hard to convert format-wise. :)
