Kingdom Rush: Legends - An RTS Based on the KR Series

by Uranato » Thu Dec 03, 2020 9:39 am

This aims at a sort of revival in the forums through the use of fan-fiction, in this case a Real-Time Strategy (RTS) game instead of a Tower Defense (TD) game. For those new to RTS games - you basically have to control your troops / units across the open map (no set paths like in TDs) and achieve a set of goals. Iron Marines, a game from Ironhide, is also an RTS, albeit KRL's mechanics will be quit different from IM's.

Wanted to say here that I'll add content haphazardly at first - like a few enemies first, then random units etc. The game elements will generally be unbalanced at first. This will improve once i have added 3-4 Stages.

Stages follow here.

Mayhelm

Hail, Your Majesty! The establishment of the city of Mayhelm is nearing completion, and the trading town will expand Linirea's power in the region. With refined infrastructure and all services to allow the free flow of wealth, Mayhelm will soon become a strategically important location for the Kingdom.

However, we have run into a problem. The city's superb sewer system has come in contact with old sewers made centuries ago, and vile pests are emerging from these underground systems to terrorize our builders and guards stationed in the city. We must protect them to ensure the safe and sure development of Mayhelm, and eradicate these vermin!

KRL RTS: Enemies

Ratmen

Rodents mutated into humanoids, Ratmen are generally small, fast and brown-furred, and have the snout, claws and tail of a rat. Wearing scarce armor and mostly using broken tools as makeshift weapons (aside from their elite warriors), the poorly armed and armored Ratmen are vulnerable to area damage. They must not be underestimated though, as with a few gimmicks up their furry sleeves they can swarm and destroy entire Human cities!

Giant Rat

Big rats brown in color, they are almost half the size of your troops. Apart from their furry bodies and light-colored tails, they have no special features.

Where there are sewers there are rats, and these abnormally large pests can be a real nuisance.

Hitpoints: 100
Damage: 10-20
- Bites or claws at enemies every 1 second.
Armor: None (0)
Resistance: None (0)
Speed: Fast (120)
Bounty: 5

Ratman

Humanoid rats with long, pink tails, they are smaller than your troops and have a lighter patch of fur on their front. They wear no armor, have yellow eyes, and wield a rusty pipe, a bent saw or a nail board.

Pests mutated into humanoid forms, they wield junk found down in the sewers as makeshift weapons.

Hitpoints: 450
Damage: 25-40
- Bashes enemies with its makeshift weapon every 1 second.
Armor: None (0)
Resistance: None (0)
Speed: Fast (150)
Bounty: 25

Ratman Stalker

These Ratmen are much darker in color than the regular vermin. Wearing a very dark brown cloak and hood, and with two brown straps across their front joining in a circular metal plate, these archers carry their quivers on their backs and fire their black arrows from their simple black bows.

Elite Ratmen trained in archery, they specialize in eliminating their targets from afar with deadly accuracy.

Hitpoints: 725
Damage: 55-75
- Fires an arrow every 1.5 second.
Range: Average
Armor: None (0)
Resistance: None (0)
Speed: Fast (135)
Bounty: 40

Rat Nest
[Building]

A mass of brown refuse and waste strewn with various broken objects such as wooden planks or iron rods, with a dark hole serving as a doorway from which Rats and Ratmen emerge to attack.

Makeshift homes of vile pests, these lairs are a plague for the Kingdom.

Hitpoints: 3000
Armor: None (0)
Resistance: None (0)
Bounty: 200

The Ratmen are rumored to have a giant weapon at their disposal ...

Cool, but I hope we aren’t relegated to being glorified plumbers the whole game. ;)

I don’t have too much to review here, but I will say it’s a bit tricky to visualize all of this in a way that makes it interesting. It feels kind of abstract. I suppose that’s a challege that has to be overcome when conveying an RTS solely through text.

We start off as glorified plumbers, but once you get deeper into the sewers (yes, we're going down), you'll realize you the actual rats here are ...

Not gonna spoil too much here.

The level text as of now is literally just kind of self-talk (everything will be haphazard at first). I'll refine it with maps, timers and all details eventually, and then it'll be much more concrete.
