Shields get weaker over time; they have an initial defense which quickly fades from the hero. Also, they don't defend against all damage, just a small portion, ergo there is balance.

More notes:
Ignus seems very OP.The only strange thing is that he has
to wait through a 2 second reload on his Z attack,(which
deals 18 damage)while Malik doesn't have to wait at all
for his Z attack.(which deals 22 damage.)
Also,it really seems like some attacks should have stuns.(like Grawl's ground pound
and Magnus' attack with the stars picture.)
