I play on the basis that while the arsenal purchases and new heroes are nice for making things easy, they should never feel essential, and the game can be won with just the basic heroes and effective strategy.
I finished the first two worlds on impossible with Taggins (Kara has okay range, but is too weak. Paragon is just abysmal). I'm close to finishing the tech tree, but even what upgrades I haven't completed don't feel like they'd make a difference at how exasperating new world is.
Reiterating what BigLou mentioned, trying to build up your defences slows the game down where its no fun. A strategy I was forced to use to pass the second level was abusing the Channellers phase movement and bypassing enemy lines to scavenge for command points. Then it's getting as many Brawlers as I can and letting them sit undisturbed until I build enough forces/fortifications. It makes it that much more frustrating, (especially with the time wasted on the extra turret level upgrades you expect will keep them alive) that this world viciously counter-swarms you after you take an objective in a way that previous two worlds never did, and you come out with less then you gained, if not an outright loss for the half-hour or more investment put in one level.
Given another try, I might be able to beat the third mission, Game of Horns, on my next try, but moving with the mechas to siege has never been fun because of how slow they go, and it irritates me how the new enemies can hit you from the fog of war without revealing themselves. As for the two spec op missions - even with a maxed tech tree, I can't even figure out how to beat them at this point without stockpiling on arsenal.
Maybe it's just a case of needing to "get gud" but the swarm spamming of this world feels out of place in a way that doesn't fit the mechanic established by the first two worlds. If there's a balance patch, I might give it another go. It's challenging right now, but not in a fun way.
