Games with interesting concepts and mechanics

by dimumurray » Wed Oct 19, 2011 1:59 pm

I have a love for games that explore unusual mechanics and ideas.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Sky Island
Seems like your standard 2D platformer up until you have to rotate your world in 3D!

Flow
Most fun I've had playing a microbe!

Cloud
Built by the same developers behind the aforementioned Flow. Play it and become a cloud gatherer.

Georganism
Goo merging. Trust me its not as bad as it sounds

Anyone else care to share?

Yes, and you can put the prompts to be different, or build threat on certain areas as well, there's a ton of stuff that could be done off of such fuzzy foundations! Basically rather than the game being pandemic style of 'keep doing the most effecient and hope it's enough' it's a matter of trying to balance the effeciency of your moves with how the ai is likely to respond to it, high threat moves are great distractions, but suck for casually playing because the AI will throw more units at you in response etc. etc.

This happens to be an old game. Its not the first to implement "cut the rope" mechanics but they've thrown in some very innovative twists. Plus the developers recently just ported it to HTML5. Check it out:

Not really, I kind of stumbled upon the developer's site. More specifically this video/article where they discuss the hurdles of porting the game to HTML5. Great read and video.
